Sweetpea was found by a member of the public at council tip in the Derby area, shut inside her carrier with no means of escape. Some medication inside the carrier indicated that she was on treatment for her thyroid, however there were no instructions to say how much of the drug she required.

The quick-thinking passer-by took her home and contacted the Cats Protection’s Derby Adoption Centre, who were able to take her into their care.

Sweetpea was quickly seen by a vet, who carried out blood tests and prescribed medication to help stabilise her condition. She later underwent surgery to remove her thyroid glands, check she had been neutered and fix some problems with her teeth.

Her age has been estimated at around 12+ years and she is now doing well and ready to find her perfect new home.

Cats Protection’s Derby Adoption Centre Manager, Helen Wood, said: “If she had not been found when she was, we dread to think what may have happened to her. She could have been crushed to death!

“We understand that times are tough for people, with the current cost of living crisis, and perhaps her owners felt they had no other option but to give her up. But we would ask people to please, please get in touch with us if they’re struggling, rather than dumping their cats. We won’t judge, and we will help as soon as we’re able to.
