Brother and sister take on 16-mile canal cycling challenge in memory of "amazing" Bolsover grandma

A brother and sister have cycled 16 miles in tribute to their “amazing” grandma who died of cancer earlier this year.

Brother and sister Florence and Samuel Haigh rode across Birmingham’s canals to raise money for Ashgate Hospicecare who cared for their grandma Jeanette at their Inpatient Unit and at her home.

The 11-year-old and 7-year-old cycled a testing 16 miles from the north to the south of the city in a single day to support the charity.

Florence and Samuel’s grandma Jeanette Haigh died in June, aged 72, after being diagnosed with cancer.

She was from Bolsover and her family said she received “compassionate” care at Ashgate’s Inpatient Unit before she died at home with family by her side.

The duo exceeded their initial goal of £500 and have now surpassed £1,500 in donations thanks to the generosity of family, friends and the Bolsover community.

Florence said: “The inspiration for the fundraiser came after we wanted to help a charity which provided so much support for our grandma.

“They really cared for our grandma, and it also helped give our grandad a break!

“Our grandma was a truly amazing person.

"She always put others before herself and worked hard to make the world a better place."

Samuel added: “I think our family and friends are very proud of us.

"Everyone in Bolsover has been amazing and given us lots of money.
