Some have found new uses as cafes, shops and restaurants, but many more either been bulldozed to make way for new homes or converted into private housing or flats.
Here are 10 former pubs in north Derbyshire which have been demolished or converted – or are threatened with the bulldozers or conversion under current plans.
5. The Butchers Arms, Marsh Lane
The Butchers Arms was saved from demolition in July 2021 when North East Derbyshire district councillors threw out plans to replace it with new homes. They said the building was a 'heritage asset that contributes positively to the character of the area'. Planning officers had recommended the development go ahead, however, and the building's future remains uncertain. Photo: Terry Walden

Developers were given permission to demolish The Trumpeter' Inn, at Grangewood, in June 2020. Chesterfield Borough Council gave the goahead for plans to knock down the pub, and build 12 two-bedroom dormer bungalows at the site. Photo: Submitted
7. Duke of York, Eckington
Plans to convert The Duke of York pub, on Market Street, Eckington, into five two-bedroom were approved by North East Derbyshire District Council in August 2021. Planning documents said the venue had became a magnet for ‘undesirable activities’ before its closure. Photo: Brian Eyre
8. Elm Tree Inn, Staveley
Developers resubmitted plans to turn the Elm Tree Inn, on High Street, Staveley, into 24 flats last November. Developers blamed ‘extensive delays’ caused by the Covid-19 pandemic for a previously approved scheme running out of time. Photo: jason chadwick
