Mark World Kindness Day!

Methodist local preacher John Moorley writes about the special days taking place this month.

Our trip to the Tower of London to see the Poppies is now history and Remembrance Sunday is gone.

So I consulted ‘Google’ to see what else was in the media for week commencing November 13th: Politically it could be a quiet few days as Parliament is in recess until Monday 17th.

Some of the cancer charities have designated November as awareness month for pancreatic, mouth and prostate cancers, the latter charity even renaming the month Movember and encouraging fellas to grow a tash/beard or both.

Still on the health and care theme, Friday 14th is World Diabetes Day.

The main UK churches have designated 16th to 22nd as Prisons Week with a call to pray for all those affected by prison, that we may build a sense of hope in each other that life will in some measure be restored.

For today, Thursday 13th, I found a real cracker! “World Kindness Day” which has been recognised in many countries throughout the world for a number of years.

Driven by The World Kindness Movement, the day involves people around the world showing that we can think about more than ourselves and make the world a better place because of it.

Mark Twain summarised kindness when he said it is “the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see”.

Wordsworth said; “the best bits of a man’s life are the simple, random acts of kindness and love”.

Mark Twain and Wordsworth, famous as they were, pale into insignificance when you look at what Jesus said about kindness in his teaching.

When you give food to the hungry, a drink to the thirsty, hospitality to the stranger, clothes to the needy and care to those who are sick Jesus said that it is just like doing it for Him. (Why not read the whole story in Matthew 25 vv 31-46).

It really doesn’t take much to show someone, somewhere, an act of kindness – so what will you do on 13th November and each day that follows?
