E-motorbike riders who sped through Chesterfield, set to appear in court after incident

“Officers are tackling nuisance and illegal vehicle use in the town as a priority”

Two men who sped through Chesterfield on electric motorbikes, allegedly mounting pavements and entering live lanes of traffic, have been reported for dangerous driving.

The men, both aged 19, were spotted in the Chatsworth Road area by an off-duty police officer on Friday, October 16.

Police said that they were seen to speed onto West Barrs roundabout, where they failed to give way to other road users.

The men then rode across three live lanes of traffic, onto the central grassed area of the roundabout before again riding into the three lanes of traffic.

Police said they continued along Wheatbridge Road and through a pedestrian crossing as the lights changed to red, before mounting the pavement close to Lidl and eventually exiting into an address on Chatsworth Road.

The pair were located inside an address with the bikes and were voluntary interviewed by officers and had their motorbikes seized.

The men were reported to court for dangerous driving, driving without a licence, and driving without insurance.

Inspector Josh Carter, who leads local policing in Chesterfield, said: “This result forms part of our ongoing work to tackle nuisance motorbike and e-bike use in Chesterfield.

“We recognise the risks to members of the public that this type of anti-social behaviour poses and have a number of measures in place to clamp down unauthorised or dangerous use of vehicles in the area.

“Chatsworth Road falls within the Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) – which bans nuisance vehicle use of any kind.

“Our officers regularly patrol the town centre and public spaces to ensure these rules are enforced through the issuing of fines, prosecutions and words of advice.

“I would like to encourage members of the public to continue reporting incidents to us as this helps us to build up a picture of where we need to focus resources, increase patrols and plan proactive operations.

“Officers are tackling nuisance and illegal vehicle use in the town as a priority in conjunction with the council and other partner agencies through the enforcement of the PSPO and other initiatives such as the Chesterfield Town Centre Partnership.

“We remain determined to ensure people in Chesterfield can enjoy a good quality of life and visit the town’s public parks and spaces in peace.”
