Police step up patrols amid spike in Derbyshire burglaries - with criminals targeting properties and vehicles

Police have urged residents in Derbyshire to keep their properties secure amid a spike in burglaries.

Police have issued a warning amid a spike in burglaries - with officers stepping up patrols in Derbyshire while criminals are targeting both homes and vehicles.

Over the past week, the Killamarsh and Eckington Safer Neighbourhood Team have seen an increase in burglaries and thefts across the Ridgeway and Eckington areas.

A team spokesperson said: ”Officers are conducting increased high-visibility patrols across Ridgeway and Eckington, focusing on areas affected by recent incidents and identified hotspot locations.

“We are carrying out reassurance patrols, speaking with residents, gathering intelligence and providing crime prevention advice.

“We will also be attending community catch-ups and crime prevention events, giving residents the opportunity to discuss any concerns, ask questions, receive security advice and find out what is being done locally to tackle offending.

“We continue to review reports and intelligence to identify those responsible and take appropriate enforcement action where possible.

“Please remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Any details such as descriptions, clothing, direction of travel, CCTV footage, doorbell footage, or the time and location can be extremely helpful.

“We are asking residents to remain vigilant and take a few simple steps to help protect their homes, vehicles, and property.”

The following safety advice was issued to residents in the area:

Make sure all doors and windows are locked, even if you are only leaving your property for a short time.

Keep house and vehicle keys out of sight and away from doors, windows and letterboxes.

Use security lighting, CCTV, alarms or video doorbells where possible.

Secure garages, sheds and outbuildings with good-quality locks and store valuable items out of view.

Always lock your vehicle, close all windows and never leave valuables on display.

If you own a keyless vehicle, consider using a signal-blocking pouch for your keys.
