Judge brands Chesterfield drug addict “selfish and mindless” after family assaults

District Judge Jonathan Taaffe told John Parker, 37, his drug-fuelled antics were “heartbreaking” for those who had to suffer them.

Chesterfield Magistrates Court heard how on December 29 last year Parker attacked family members at his grandmother’s house - where he had been staying for some time.

Parker was said to have “lunged” at his aunt when she stood in front of her mother - however she was able to push him away and he fell backwards into a chair.

He then began “screaming at the top of his voice”.

The court heard Parker also “shoved” his father who had arrived to confront him - however police had been called and he was arrested immediately.

In a victim statement Parker’s father said: “We don’t need anymore stress in terms of John’s drug-taking.”

Parker’s solicitor James Riley said the defendant was “clearly under the influence of drugs at the time” and there were mental health issues as a result of his drug use.

Mr Riley said no injuries were caused by Parker’s outburst and he was now “moving on the right track” by seeking help from a drug worker.

Noting Parker had a history of “violent behaviour” Judge Taaffe told him although the assaults were “not the most serious” the court had to mark them with a custodial sentence.

Parker, of Cobden Road, Chesterfield, admitted two counts of assault by beating.

He was jailed for 10 weeks suspended for 12 months and handed 12 rehabilitation activity sessions and a six-month drug rehabilitation requirement.
