The incident happened at Holmebrook Valley Park on Sunday (February 7) at around 12.20pm when the horse and its owner were walking along the bridlepath.

The owner said a Staffie type dog that was white with dark patches ‘came out of nowhere’ before attacking the pair, jumped up at and biting the horse several times and ‘ripping her skin in places’.

"We were extremely lucky to stay together and not damage any other park users.

"Eventually she managed to outrun and shake the dog off. I’m horrified that this dog is off the lead where children and other small dogs are around.

"I was so shocked I unfortunately didn’t get a picture of the dog, I was thanking my lucky stars we were alive at that point.

”I really hope my poor mare isn’t too frightened next time a dog comes near her. She did not deserve that.”
