Part of the popular Monsal Trail walking and cycling route through the Peak District is closing temporarily for essential work.

Three tunnels will be closed between Monday and Friday starting today, Monday, September 28, though the route will remain open in full at the weekend.

Headstone Tunnel, from the west entrance off the Monsal Dale Viaduct, extending approximately half a mile to the east of the tunnel on the Great Longstone side, will be shut to enable essential safety and conservation work at the entrances.

And Litton and Cressbrook tunnels will be closed to allow safety work.

The Peak District National Park Authority said the rest of the trail would remain accessible, with people able to reach the Monsal Dale viaduct via the path from Monsal Head.

The work being carried out involves trees being coppiced or felled to prevent damage to the historic railway tunnels along the traffic-free trail, which attracts more than 300,000 visitors a year.
