The Fox & Goose Inn at Wigley is one of the oldest pubs in Derbyshire – offering great views over the surrounding area.
The Derbyshire Times was invited to learn more about the history of the Fox & Goose – and these photos show why you should make plans to visit over the coming weeks.

13. Unique spot
Local residents came up with the name for Pudding Pie Hill, as the slake lime burnt on the fields to aid plant growth in historic times gave the hill the appearance of a giant steamed pudding. Photo: Brian Eyre

14. “Great views”
Craig said: “We have extensive grounds up here with great views over Chesterfield, along with a play area.” Photo: Brian Eyre

15. Friendly spirit
The pub has restored the old Wigley Spring as the venue’s water supply, and you can see the source of the spring - The Wigley Wishing Well - at the entrance to the Abbey Function Suite. The Fox & Goose is also said to be visited by the friendly spirit of former landlord Don Newsome, who sadly passed away on the premises, and still takes a keen interest in its visiting patrons. 16. Christmas
A choir will perform at the pub on Christmas Eve with Santa in attendance, and Santa will be visiting regularly ahead of December 25. Craig added: “We’re fully geared up for families over Christmas.” Photo: Brian Eyre
