Music lovers of the time have been reflecting on big-name gigs at The Regal, ABC, The Vic ballroom and St James Hall (Jimmy’s).
Craig Durran said: “Chesterfield used to be on the major gigging circuit back in the 60’s, I know The Seekers, Hendrix, Pink Floyd all played in Chesterfield.”
The two biggest bands of the Sixties, The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, were noticeable by their absence from the town’s buzzing music scene.
But few could argue that Chesterfield hooked some of the best live acts of the Swinging Sixties…

Jimi Hendrix and the Experience played at the ABC in Chesterfield on April 8, 1962, on a bill that included The Walker Brothers, Cat Stevens and Engelbert Humperdinck. 3. Cliff Richard and the Shadows
Margaret Jones was a starstruck schoolgirl when Cliff Richard came to town. She said: "I remember walking along the Vic verandah. We saw Cliff Richard and the Shadows going into the Victoria Cinema and politely asked for his autograph. We were told by one of his band to leave him alone and they walked away.
