Music lovers of the time have been reflecting on big-name gigs at The Regal, ABC, The Vic ballroom and St James Hall (Jimmy’s).
Craig Durran said: “Chesterfield used to be on the major gigging circuit back in the 60’s, I know The Seekers, Hendrix, Pink Floyd all played in Chesterfield.”
The two biggest bands of the Sixties, The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, were noticeable by their absence from the town’s buzzing music scene.
But few could argue that Chesterfield hooked some of the best live acts of the Swinging Sixties…

Jimi Hendrix and the Experience played at the ABC in Chesterfield on April 8, 1962, on a bill that included The Walker Brothers, Cat Stevens and Engelbert Humperdinck. Rob Taylor commented four years ago: "My sister was at the Hendrix gig (to see the Walker Bros) and Hendrix dedicated a song to her - 'Foxy Lady'. " But not everyone was won over by the headline act; the Derbyshire Times reviewer wrote: "Jimi Hendrix and the Experience is one Experience I would rather forget.
