Investment in the town saw the Post Office open its Accounts – General Department at Chetwynd House and the launch of the first purpose-built bingo hall in the country.
Firefighters saved the iconic Crooked Spire from ruin when an electrical fault caused a blaze and £30,000 worth of damage.
And star names such as Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and Englebert Humperdinck played shows in Chesterfield.
