Plans to transform Chesterfield pub site into care home will create 70 jobs

A planning application has been submitted to transform the site of the former Walton Hotel, on St Augustine’s Road, Birdholme, into the £4m two-storey development.

Crown Care is promising the home will be a ‘state of the art’ care facility for the elderly, with a ‘vibrant and lively ambience’, providing 64 bedrooms and a ‘safe and homely environment’.

It is expected to create about 70 full and part-time jobs in the community and will be staffed 24 hours a day.

Crown Care says the development will have ‘a wider benefit to the community in increasing the demand for support services’ and will have ‘a positive impact on local values

and may provoke other capital investment in the area’.

The company also promises that the building ‘has been designed to include generous recreational areas, larger than normal bedrooms and additional facilities such as all en-suite WCs and showers, and activity rooms.”

Planning documents add: “The site offers easy access to local amenities and services and will help to make an important contribution to the requirement of elderly care accommodation in Chesterfield.”

It is believed the site has stood empty and derelict since the Walton Hotel was demolished in about 2015, according to planning documents submitted to the council.

The latest application for the site will be considered at a future meeting of Chesterfield Borough Council’s planning committee.
