Headteacher Dave Williams said: “We are proud of each and every student, more so this year given the courage shown by this year group in these difficult times.

"This is a testament to the dedication and commitment of the students and staff here at Netherthorpe. I wish all our students well in the future, whether at university, under taking apprenticeships or in the world of work.”

Sixth form students at Netherthrpe took it upon themselves to help in the community during the lockdown, by delivering food to the most in need and raising money for good causes.

A school spokesperson said: "These young people stepped up to help and take their place in the community, at home and in a range of circumstances, during these difficult times, without the normality that education and examinations has befitted generations before.”

Across the UK there was ‘deep frustration’ in schools about the confusion caused by late changes to the results system, teachers' unions said.

In England, 36 per cent of entries had a lower grade than teachers predicted, in results for exams cancelled by the pandemic.
