A deal to sell the first and second floors of the prominent Market Square building to convert them into flats was completed last summer.

Property consultants FHP announced it had brokered a deal to sell the old Post Office to Balmoral Investment & Development – which will convert the Grade-II listed space into ten 'high quality' flats.

Now this work is underway as engineers carried out acoustic tests as part of the conditions of planning permission for the site.

Tests were carried out by Environmental Noise Solutions on January 14 and developers have informed Chesterfield Borough Council so work can continue at the site.

The first and second floors have been closed since 2014 when the Post Office moved its services to WH Smith in the Pavements Shopping Centre.

Plans to convert the Post Office into apartments were passed by Chesterfield Borough Council in June 2018.

The move will bring the entire building back into use - in August 2018, bar and restaurant Sorbo lounge opened on the ground floor.

Encouraging more people to live in the town centre is a key element in Chesterfield Borough Council’s new Housing Strategy which was unveiled last week.
