Retail director, Austin Cooke, said: “Poundland has always played an important role in our communities. Almost two thirds of our customers walk or catch a bus to visit one of our stores.

“It’s never been more vital for people to have local shops they can rely on for the essential items they will need to get through this nationwide crisis. We take great pride in sourcing two thirds of our grocery products in the UK.

“We’re delighted to be opening in Clay Cross where we are determined to play our part in getting through the coming months and making a valuable contribution to the town’s long-term future.”

The store’s extensive range of products includes groceries such as cereals, soups, tinned meat and fish, pasta and rice, toiletries such as hand wash and soap, and home products such as disinfectant, surface cleaner, toilet roll and kitchen roll.

Items will be on sale from 50p to £5 and three quarters of products will be at Poundland’s famous £1 price.

Part of the new 12,000 sq ft store will be devoted to the full range of Poundland’s PEP&CO fashion for the whole family, bringing a new brand of affordable clothing to Clay Cross. Prices start at £1 and 95 per cent of the range is under £10.

Poundland says it is taking coronavirus seriously from a health perspective and has significantly increased its cleaning regime and have re-briefed all 18,000 company staff on best practice.

Bosses say the investment in the new store is a ‘vote of confidence in Clay Cross’ and the redevelopment of the town centre.
