“Absolute chaos” as Chesterfield drivers queue to fill up their tanks

Cars can be seen filing up in lines from the pumps all the way out onto St Lawrence Road.

Co-op worker Gavin Heath, 40 described the situation as “absolute chaos”.

It is understood the station, now completely out of diesel, still has some unleaded.

Panic-buying at fuel forecourts was triggered following reports of a shortage of HGV drivers.

However Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has told the BBC's Andrew Marr there is "no shortage of fuel" and a shortage of HGV drivers was "not anything new".

The UK is said to be short of about 90,000 HGV drivers.

Mr Shapps announced a "big package" of measures – including temporary visas for foreign HGV drivers put off working in the UK due to Brexit – to tackle the crisis.
