Their jobs will be saved if a new publican can be found before Roger, 62, and Linda, 59, step down.

Roger, who worked as an electrician before running the pub, said: “The reaction has been overwhelming. It was a very emotional night last night (Tuesday) and we are still a bit sore, but it just seems the right thing to do given our age and the current climate.

"It’s been a pleasure to be a custodian of what is a lovely pub.”

Punch Pubs said they are ‘committed’ to keeping The Crown open.

A new management team could be in place before the end of November.

Roger, who has been married to Linda for 39 years, added: “It’s been good, otherwise we wouldn’t have run it for so long. It’s a way of life, you either take to it or you don’t.”

Mandy Southall, operations director at Punch Pubs, said: “Roger and Linda have been in the pub for over 28 years and have done amazing things over the years, with their community at the heart of everything they do. They are fantastic publicans and we are sure they will be missed.

"The Crown is a fantastic pub and we are committed to its long term future and success. We look forward to continuing to serve the local community, welcoming customers old and new to enjoy their local pub.”

Elizabeth Louise added: “Thank you for some great times, memories and fabulous meals over the decades.”
