Unique partnership of farmers, businesses and funders delivers a 'win win' for wildlife in Derbyshire
Farmers have planted an impressive 15,500 metres of hedgerow and 18,000 trees
Hope Valley Farmers has joined forces with Breedon Group plc, the Woodland Trust and the Peak District National Park to plant new hedges and trees across the Hope Valley.

Hope Valley Farmers have planted an impressive 15,500 metres of hedgerow and 18,000 trees since the group was established in 2018.
Hedgerows have been a defining feature of the lower slopes of the Hope Valley since the Enclosure Acts of the 1700s. They mark the boundaries of ancient medieval field patterns and provide vital habitat for many species of bird, insect and mammal.

Chloe Palmer, Facilitator of Hope Valley Farmers points to the planting which connects existing hedgerows, woodlands, meadows, ditches and ponds across the valley.
“One of the greatest challenges facing many species today is habitat fragmentation, making it increasingly difficult for mammals, amphibians and certain bird species to move freely through their environment.
“For example, hedgerows serve as vital navigational corridors for bats flying through the countryside and are an important source of insects for them too. Hedgehogs inhabit the base of hedges where they shelter and feed on berries and invertebrates.
“By establishing these extensive hedgerow networks and managing them appropriately, Hope Valley Farmers are improving the prospects of survival for these important species.”
Trees and hedging plants have been donated by the Woodland Trust, while the Peak District National Park’s Farming in Protected Landscapes programme and Breedon Group plc has provided funding towards the costs of fencing and maintenance to protect the newly established hedges and trees.
Adam Bakri, Biodiversity Officer at Breedon’s Hope Cement Works, comments:
“In addition to hedges supporting biodiversity, they reduce surface water run-off, improve soil health and provide shelter for livestock.
“As part of our sites Biodiversity Action Plan, we are committed to making a positive contribution to the landscapes in which we operate. Supporting Hope Valley Farmers in this initiative is a natural extension of that commitment
"We are proud to be playing a part in restoring and enhancing this exceptional environment for the long term.
