Explore the great outdoors high above Peak District as Heights of Abraham reopens to visitors

The outdoor opening period, expected to run until mid-May – when indoor dining and entertainment including museums and cinemas is set to reopen – means visitors can take the famous Peak District cable car ride for two- thirds of the usual price.

This is a great opportunity to enjoy the spectacular views over Matlock and Matlock Bath with fewer people vying for space on the picnic benches and children’s playgrounds.

The guided cavern tours are closed for the moment, as is the Through the Lens exhibition and film theatre shows, but there is still plenty for visitors to do.

The main attraction – the cable car trip to Masson Hill, which rises 1,111 feet above sea level, is still operating as normal, but you can only travel in your own family group and must wear a face mask on board.

Breathtaking views over valley

The panoramic views of the Derwent Valley are breathtaking and the cable cars are designed to give you a chance to look at the landscape from every angle.

Despite tickets being fully booked on the day of our visit, the queues moved quickly and once at the top, it never felt busy or crowded.

Children are given a free spring-themed trail which they complete for a sticker and the booklet includes puzzles, activities and things to spot on the Heights of Abraham estate.

There are two sizeable playgrounds – one near enough to the café for parents to relax with a drink and a snack on the outdoor seating while little ones let off steam.

The second has slightly more ambitious play equipment designed for older children, including some long slides set into the steep hillside, making the most of the natural features the site has to offer.

When it comes to walks, visitors are spoilt for choice – everywhere you look is a feast for the eyes.

Head up to Tinker’s Shaft – the location miners once entered the caverns close to top of the hill – and if you can manage spiral staircases, you can climb to the top of the Victoria Prospect Tower, built especially to make the most of the stunning views.
