Derby Theatre launches expert-led creative arts digital workshops for young people

This month Derby Theatres will launch a digital programme for 15-25 year olds. Every fortnight a new artist will be introduced via an Instagram Live interview and a week after the interview, each artist will run a practical workshop on Zoom.

Sarah Brigham (artistic director and chief executive officer at Derby Theatre) will launch the Futures Unlocked series. Sarah’s Instagram Live interview will be on Tuesday, June 23, from 4.30 to 5pm, and her Zoom workshop will be on Tuesday, June 30 from 4.30pm to 5.30pm.

The other artists include: British novelist, Alex Wheatle MBE whose novels include Home Girl and Crongton Knights (which won the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize Paperback in 2016); Rukus, artistic director of Baby People and an artist, producer, DJ, rapper and musician and Tim Crouch, an experimental theatre maker, actor, writer and director. The final artist will be announced soon.

Caroline Barth (creative learning director at Derby Theatre) said: “What better opportunity than the current situation to be able to “meet” some of our most exciting artists and hear directly about their careers and their advice for the next generation. Using Instagram Live, means young people will also be able to interact. Not only that, but the smaller Zoom workshops will give a unique and practical insight into the way these artists work.
