Workmanlike display extends unbeaten run

A third hat-trick in a row by Damian Jarzembowski sealed victory for Chesterfield to maintain their unbeaten start to the season against visitors Coalville Town.

Skipper Christian Battye was pleased with Chesterfield’s display despite not being at their best, with tough tests on the horizon this weekend at in-form Boots.

He said: “To be truthful, we weren’t always at our best but our energy and work rate was just too much for them – especially in the first half.

“We should have had more but they were willing to but their bodies on the line and defended very well against us. Next week is a huge test for us away at Boots, who’ve won all three of their games so we’ll have to be ready.”

The home side got off to the perfect start when Jarzembowski picked the ball up on the half-way line and carried the ball down the right wing, past three defenders before lifting the ball past the goalkeeper and into the top left corner off the post.

Jarzembowski had already come close twice from a penalty corner, just missing the left post and hitting the right upright, before eventually firing a penalty flick through the goalkeeper’s legs to make it 2-0.

Chesterfield made it three when Dan Molloy’s reverse stick cross from the left edge of the circle was cleverly turned towards goal by Chris Cowley and turned into the empty net by Joe Morton, scoring his debut goal for the first team.

Coalville gave themselves a lifeline just before half-time when a powerful ball into the circle could only be half stopped by Johnny Hancock, who deflected the ball to the unmarked striker at the far post to tap home.

Jarzembowski completed his hat-trick moments later when he reacted first from a rebound allowing him the space in the circle to find the bottom left corner with a powerful strike.

The visitors could count themselves unfortunate to be 4-1 down at half-time given their spirited performance, but only some brilliant last ditch defending and poor finishing in the second half prevented Chesterfield from extending their lead.

It took until mid-way through the second half before Chesterfield extended their lead when a powerful turn and shot by Dan Molloy at the top of the circle rifled the ball through the ‘keeper’s legs for a second time.

Pat Grant, Johnny Hancock and Chris Cowley all saw shots brilliantly saved on the line by the Coaville defenders and Jarzembowski had three reverse stick shots sail over the bar, as well as seeing a drag-flick bounce off the crossbar.

The home side made it six, just before full time when a flowing passing move down the left came across the circle to Ben Lamb who fired a powerful shot into the bottom left.

A youthful Chesterfield side went out of the England Men’s Trophy at the first hurdle on Sunday, going down 4-3 to Hampton In Arden.
