Shirebrook Town were beaten 2-1 at the home of league leaders Hemsworth on Saturday.

Shirebrook named an unchanged team from the victory against Dronfield and started the game strongly, dominating the first ten minutes.

However, they then made all their own problems in the 11th minute when a Cardwell back pass was short and intercepted by Danny Critchlow and he had the simple task of putting the ball into an empty net with what was Hemsworth’s first attack of the game.

Again Shirebrook were the better team for the next 20 minutes but could find the goal and things got even worse for the visitors in the 35th minute when Shane Kelsey’s free-kick took a big deflection off the wall and wrong footed Dean in the Shirebrook to make it 2-0.

Shirebrook had a big chance to get back in the game two minutes after the restart when Greenfield shot from a tight angle but it hit the post.

Shirebrook did pull a goal back in the 43rd minute when a Greenfield cross found Currie who headed into the net to give Shirebrook some hope heading into the second-half.

The second-half started the way the first finished with Shirebrook doing most of the attacking and Cardwell almost made up for his first half error when his header was inches wide, however with Shirebrook pushing more men forward the back door was left open by the defence a number of times and every time Dean was there to make the save.

With Shirebrook still pushing forward, Currie, Rowley, Fox, Greenfield and Shepherd all had chances and with time running out sub Josh Gibson had the best chance of the lot to get a point in injury time but his header was straight at the keeper and Shirebrook headed home thinking what should have been.

Shirebrook are back in action this Saturday when Grimsby Borough visit Langwith Road for a 3pm kick-off.
