£10,000 up for grabs in fundraising Cash for Kids Sports Challenge

The Hallam FM organised event – open to grassroots junior community sports groups across South Yorkshire and Derbyshire – aims to encourage fundraising to get more children into sport.

Those taking part in the month-long challenge will keep what they raise but the three raising most money win also win big cash prizes to add to their pot.

The group raising most money will receive an additional £5,000, second place gets £2,500 and third will receive £1,500 – all on top of what they have already raised, subject to it being at least the equivalent amount. For full rules see terms and conditions.

Plus there are special awards of £500 each for the best use of social media and most creative fundraising idea.

Inspired by the Lionesses and the athletes at the Commonwealth Games, Hallam FM says Cash For Kids Sporting Challenge is to help the next generation of sporting stars.

The challenge is aimed at supporting children and young people who find it difficult to get into sport, either through disadvantage or disability, so entries will be judged on how the group can make a difference to children in their community.Groups will be supported by Cash for Kids so they won't be going it alone.

They will be given the benefit of the organiser’s fundraising experience and a full set of materials to help raise as much as possible - providing skills to take forward into their own future activities.

Hallam FM’s Big John at Breakfast, who helped to launch the Challenge, said; “As well as the physical and mental health benefits, sport is so important for children in helping them make new friends and boosting their self-esteem.

"We want all children to be able to take part in sports and I’m so proud that our charity has launched the Cash for Kids Sports Challenge to enable more children and young people in South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire to get active. We can’t wait to see what all the local groups & clubs come up with to fundraise.”

The dream of one day being a Lioness or a Commonwealth Games medallist is something that is beyond the reach of so many children and young people, explained Cash for Kids’ Charity Fundraising Executive Lee Fletcher.

He said for families who are financially struggling, being unable to afford kit, membership fees or subscriptions means their kids can often miss out. For those children and young people with a disability, or additional needs, local sports clubs are often not set up to support these children in participating in their sport.

Funds could be used to subsidise membership fees, provide kit, upgrade facilities or provide staff or volunteer training to support those with additional needs.

Lee added; “With the exciting Summer of Sport this year, we’re thrilled that we could be inspiring the next generation of Lionesses and Commonwealth Games superstars through the Cash for Kids Sports Challenge.

"We’ll be there to support the groups & clubs raise as much as they can, so they won’t be going it alone. We’ve got £10,000 in funding prizes to win, so every local sports group & club should apply to take part!”

Cash for Kids is the cause related marketing arm for the Bauer Media’s network of local radio stations. It raised over £21.4 million in 2021, supporting more than 548,000 sick and underprivileged children in local communities across the UK.
