This year’s event –the official day is on Sunday – uses the slogan ‘Make it Happen’ and is designed not only to highlight women’s existing successes, but also inspire future achievements.Among the targets is a bid to get more women exercising regularly, especially those who have fallen out of the habit, or never done so

Erewash Borough Council and Derbyshire Dales District Council have thrown their support behind this push by offering a range of activities to all women without charge – and are encouraging those of all fitness levels to attend.

Among the activities on offer in Erewash, between Friday and Sunday for those over 14, are a range of exercise classes, aqua aerobics, body pump, boxercise, jogging and golf.

Derbyshire Dales’ offering, meanwhile runs from Sunday for a week and includes swimming, climbing taster sessions, dance and a variety of fitness classes, from kettlebells and x-bikes to yoga and zumba.

Dawn Cundy, an office manager at Derbyshire Fire and Rescue and mum of three, lost weight after taking up running with her local Jog Derbyshire group and is urging those who are inactive to make a positive change using the opportunities available.

“At first I was very scared, but it doesn’t matter how you look, you just have to go out and do it,” she said. “It’s a great social thing, as well as a physical thing.”

“I go out now with the kids and they ride their bikes while I run, so all the family is more active. I always thought it was hard to fit in with family, but if you want to do it, you can. It’s a good example to set for the children.”

The International Women’s Day activities tie in with the national This Girl Can campaign that was launched by Sport England in January to close the disparity between men and women in terms of those keeping active.

A series of television adverts have attempted to remove the ‘fear factor’ that can sometimes be attached to getting fit.
