Wilson: '˜We are more than a one man team'

While Ched Evans continues to score boss Danny Wilson accepts he will continue to grab the headlines, but has stressed Chesterfield are not a one-man team.

Evans struck twice in three second-half minutes to see off Walsall, taking his tally to four for the season and move the Spireites to the League One summit.

And, though Wilson is delighted to see the 27-year-old is proving too hot to handle at this level, believes it will be a team effort if they are to prove successful this term.

Wilson said: “We’ve got a little bit of quality in the squad and we’ve got a little bit of depth.

“If we can keep the lads fit then we’ll have a chance of competing.

“Ched had a couple of half chances but he doesn’t give up and I thought the first goal typified him with his pace and power, in particular with his shot.

“They didn’t think he was going to shoot and the velocity of the shot gave the goalkeeper no chance.

“Anybody who can score 20 goals a season gives a team a chance but we have other players too. Jay O’Shea’s a quality player and Dan Gardner had a good game too.”

Walsall won 4-1 at the Proact Stadium last term and arrived unbeaten in their opening two league games.

And Wilson admitted Chesterfield had to be at their best to triumph.

He added: “It was a great performance and I thought that Walsall played their part as well. They are a good footballing side with the pace and intensity they have.

“If we weren’t on top of our game they would’ve caused us problems but defensively we were absolutely fantastic.

“I thought the second half was excellent, there was some terrific football to watch. The energy levels and work rate were brilliant.”
