Wilson wants more physicality and a prolific frontman

In the wake of a 2-0 defeat at Bradford City on Sunday, the Spireites boss admitted physicality was a trait his side would need in abundance.

But he doesn’t think the squad he finished the season with is a million miles from being able to compete at the top end of the table.

He said: “I don’t think it’s a big gap, I don’t think it’s a massive gap. I’ve said that all season.

“If we had been on the ball to a certain degree we could have caused them a real problem.

“Bradford are a strong team, organised, well drilled, but there was nothing out of the ordinary that we weren’t ready for. It’s about rolling your sleeves up and having a go.

“You had big Proctor up front who just messed our centre-halves about.

“You have to deal with situations like that, you’ve got that physicality in this division and we’ve got to make sure we’ve got more men in the team next season, more physicality but also with pace and the ability on the ball we’re looking for.”

Wilson also knows he needs a man to put the ball in the net on a regular basis, because an inability to take chances has made life harder for his defence.

“Defenders can’t just be on the edge all the time because we’re making chances and not taking them.

“We have to have someone who is prolific, getting one or two chances and one is in the net.”

“You don’t want to be forever depending on a 1-0 win.

“You’ve seen what we’ve got and how we’ve cut teams apart at times, it’s that finishing bit.

“Strikers are at a premium, that’s why they go for so much money.

“But we continue to look for them and go for them and hope we get that elusive big win, week in and week out.”
