Tuesday night had already got off to a rotten start for the Linnets when their match against Chesterfield was postponed around an hour before kick-off because of a waterlogged pitch.

Dedicated staff and volunteers from the community trust worked incredibly hard throughout the day to clear the snow off the pitch but all their fantastic efforts went to waste when heavy rain made the Technique Stadium surface unplayable.

But what should have been a two-and-a-half-hour journey back for Gash and Holland turned into an absolute nightmare after they did not get home until around 10 hours later at 4am when Gash’s Mercedes hit a pot hole on the A1 and blew a tyre.

The pair had to wait more than six hours in a lay-by before help came.

"I can't say that I've ever spent six-and-a-half hours sitting in a lay-by sharing a packet of crisps with a footballer before,” Carol told lynnnews. co.uk.

"We'd literally just got on the A1 after the bus had dropped us off at the pick-up point at Newark.

"Gashy knew straight away what had happened and we were forced to pull in a lay-by which had been coned off for roadworks.

"It was about 8pm by this time and Gashy spoke to Sarah, his wife, who in turn contacted the RAC.”

Two hours passed and there was still no sign of the RAC but workmen did bring them some cups of tea.

In the end it was a local contractor from Grantham who came to their rescue at 2am.

Carol said: "Even when we did get back home, Gashy's dad had to come out to pick him up from the garage at Deeping and I think he ended up spending the rest of the night at his parents house.

"It didn't get any better for me either. No sooner as I'd got into bed, my husband's alarm was going off an hour later to get up for work!”

She added: "Looking at the weather report on the way to Chesterfield, you always knew that the game was never going to be on.”
