Why John Pemberton has been a breath of fresh air for Chesterfield and deserves his chance until the end of the season

The club has confirmed that the 55-year-old will remain caretaker manager until the end of the season after three wins and a draw in his five games in charge so far.

It is often said that a manager’s personality reflects how a team plays and I think we have seen that under ‘Pembo’.

His infectious enthusiasm and passion is rubbing off on the players as they give everything to ensure the Spireites do not suffer a third relegation in four years.

He is an effective communicator and strong motivator and the players are really enjoying his positivity.

One player told me he has time for all of the squad members which is not always the case.

Arranging a meeting for the players to speak open and honestly about how they felt following the death of Jordan Sinnott was respectful and classy and showed he does not treat them like robots.

Last week he spoke about having an “emotional attachment” to the club and how the biggest thing for him was reconnecting the supporters and the players which has long been missing. I think we are seeing some signs that is improving. Those who attend games can see they are giving everything even if they do lack quality at times.

Of course there are still split opinions on certain players but for the timebeing those feelings appear to have been moved to one side for now and everyone is pulling in the same direction.

Pemberton has also proved himself to be a good decision maker and has argubaly got most things right so far.

He has been consistent in his team selection and is not one for waiting around to make a change if needed.

As I have said before, Pemberton feels like a perfect fit for the Blues right now.

When he took over in January he said he wanted to be a “lucky manager” but it is Chesterfield who are lucky to have him.
