Lemon, 54, who played for the Spireites in the early 1990s, will be tasked with building a database of players for the club by going out and watching matches every week to identify targets.

Pemberton believes it is crucial to have a scouting structure in place for years to come, and not just while he is in charge.

“It is a position that I felt since I have been here that we needed, for someone to identify players for the club,” he said.

“When you employ another manager – which always happens – the manager is working for the club and not the club working for the manager and I think that is important.

“You look at the players you have got and bring in the best manager suited to those players and not having to bring in another five, six or seven players which are totally different to what you have got.

“So I think it is a really important position to have for the club.”

Lemon has a wealth of experience in the under-23 market and although Pemberton believes there are good players at that level, he does not want fill his squad with too many youngsters.

“If you want to get out of our league, you have got to get the best players in our league and the league above, which hopefully makes you a stronger and better team,” he said.

“I wouldn’t want too many under-23 players because this is a tough league and sometimes when you are looking at taking someone on their first loan it can be very difficult for that player so it is just getting the balance right really.”

When asked by the DT what type of player he would like to bring to the club, Pemberton explained he would want additions who can outrun the opposition, are athletic and technically very good.

He added: “I don’t particularly enjoy the ‘fight’ football but you have got to fight if you are second bottom of the league. I would like to be able to dominate a football match but we need more all-rounded players – I think that is important - and athletic players.”
