Kyle Letheren 6

A fairly comfortable and assured performance on his first appearance. Didn’t have a great deal to do and had no chance with Belper’s first goal. Replaced at half-time.

Started brightly down the right flank but a lot of the play came down Chesterfield’s left in the first half.

Josef Yarney 6+

Burst out of defence a few times with the ball despite playing on the right of a back three. Put in a good shift as he played the full 90 minutes.

Will Evans 6

Captained the side. Headed away a couple of dangerous crosses but will be disappointed with his part in Belper’s first goal which came from a long ball down the middle.

Laurence Maguire 7

A good return after a long time out injured. Brought the ball out of defence and found a pass into midfield and tried to switch play. Played 60 minutes which will benefit him hugely.

David Buchanan 7

Carried on where he left off last season. Offered width on the left hand side and a leader on the pitch. His quick-thinking led to Butterfield’s opener.

Milan Butterfield 8+

An impressive first 45 minutes in a Chesterfield shirt. Sat deep and tried to dictate play. Went and got the ball off the back three and also filled in intelligently when Yarney and Maguire surged forward. Took his goal well, firing low into the bottom corner.

Jonathan Smith 8+

Two superb goals. The first was a powerful low strike from the edge of the box into the bottom corner after his initial attempt was blocked. His second was a stunning volley from distance which Pemberton described as “out of this world.” His all-round play was decent in what was a very busy performance from him.

Joe Rowley 6

Nice to see the 21-year-old back in the starting line-up after not getting a look-in during the second half of last season. Played just in front of Butterfield and Smith and tried to find pockets of space and find passes in tight space.

Luke Rawson 7

An encouraging display from the youngster. Worked incredibly hard and made some good runs behind the Belper defence. Put himself about and came close to scoring.

Tom Denton 6

Almost got the end of a couple of crosses and was his usual threat in the box in the air.

Dylan Wharton 6

Young stopper who was in the academy last year replaced Letheren at the break. Was called into action a couple of times and made one good stop late on.

Harrison Beeden 6

A player who is the current academy set-up and has apparently caught the eye in training. Came on at right-back and got stuck in. Was told by Pemberton to “calm down” at one point.

Jamie Sharman 6

Steady performance at the back. Expect to see more of him this season.

Jack McKay 6

Another player who didn’t feature in the second half of last season. His pace caused a few problems.

Liam Mandeville 6+

Saw a lot of the ball and made the game look easy with his range of passing. Needs to add more assists and goals to his game.

Callum Brook 6

Currently in the academy with Beeden. Had one nice burst past his man down the left wing and delivered a cross.

Scott Boden 6

Had what looked like a strong shout for a penalty turned down but it was waved away by the referee.

Cameron McGilp 6

The Swindon Town midfielder has been on trial with the Spireites for the last 10 days. Played in central midfield and was neat and tidy on the ball. Looked to be left-footed and was always asking for the ball.
