Fans of both Chesterfield and Wrexham may have to wait a couple more months to see the two promotion contenders go head-to-head.

The Spireites were set to visit the Racecourse Ground on Tuesday night but it was postponed because of a frozen pitch.

Wrexham said frost covers were put down over the weekend but that was not enough to save the surface from the freezing temperatures.

It was set to be a fascinating clash in front of a sell-out crowd of more than 10,000, with the Red Dragons second and the Blues third in the National League table, but it was not to be.

Wrexham said in a statement on Monday: “With temperatures having been below freezing in Wrexham all day today, we took the decision to make an early pitch inspection to help prevent unnecessary journeys in light of the projected forecast.

“Frost covers were put down over the weekend, with the pitch fit at that time, but the extreme cold – with temperatures as low as minus seven degrees last night, and a forecast of minus five degrees tonight – has led to the decision to call the game off.

“A rearranged fixture date, and all ticket details, will be confirmed in due course.”

One thing that is certain is that there is no chance of the fixture being rearranged for next week because Chesterfield are at home to Woking on Tuesday and Wrexham host Bromley the following day.

Then we enter the Christmas period with the Spireites facing a double-header against Scunthorpe United on Boxing Day, which is a Monday, before hosting the Iron on New Year’s Day on the Sunday. So that rules that week out as well.

Both sides are involved in the FA Cup third round on Saturday, January 7 and then Town already have a rearranged trip to Wealdstone three days later.

Saturday, January 14 is marked down for FA Trophy fourth round ties, so that could be an option but it would rely on both clubs to lose their round matches this weekend. Chesterfield host Coalville Town, while Wrexham are at home to Scunthorpe United. A weekene encounter would be great for the supporters, but it seems unlikely.

The next available Tuesday night would be January 17, but that date would need to be free in case either side is involved in an FA Cup third round replay. Plus, Town host Notts County a few days later on the Saturday so it is unlikely they will want to face both promotion rivals in a matter of days.

The following Tuesday, January 24, is already filled with a home game against Altrincham, while Wrexham go to Gateshead.

So a likely date is in February because neither side has a midweek fixture currently listed until the 21st of that month.

From a Chesterfield point of view, they probably won’t want to travel to Wrexham after having made the long trip to Boreham Wood on February 4. So the next best option would probably be for it to be rescheduled for Tuesday, February 14, in-between Torquay United at home and Solihull Moors away. Wrexham would also probably be happy with that date because they are at home to Wealdstone on February 11 before travelling to Aldershot Town the following weekend.

So, a possible Valentines’ Day date could be on the cards, but there will be no love lost, that is for sure.
