Paul Cook knows more than most how things can turn around quickly in football.

Cook made more than 600 appearances during his 20-plus year playing career.

He has also been a manager for 16 years, winning league titles with Chesterfield, Portsmouth and Wigan Athletic.

And it is that experience he will call upon to help the Spireites get back to winning ways in the National League after three straight defeats.

Town face three promotion hopefuls in the next week, starting with fifth-placed Bromley at home on Saturday, a trip to York City in seventh on Tuesday night before returning to the Technique Stadium to face third-placed Boreham Wood next weekend.

Cook told the DT: “Every week can be a different week. If you are doing well, you can quickly find out you are not. If you think you are not doing too well, three games in a week can turn everything around.”

Chesterfield started the season 10 games unbeaten, which was followed by defeats to Maidenhead United, Dagenham and Redbridge and Eastleigh.

For Cook, he prefers to stay level-headed throughout and focuses more on performances than results.

He explained: “Football can mask a lot of things. We had a couple of results - Maidstone away, Yeovil away - where we probably took points out of games when we did not deserve to. When you are winning games people think the garden is all rosy.

“I am not one of those managers who reflects and looks backwards, it is very much performance-based for me and getting the combinations on the pitch that you really like.

“Players win football games, managers just set them up, for us it is about lads being fit, lads being match-fit, and going out and doing a level of performance that we like.”
