Staveley march on in League Cup to set up Cleethorpes tie

The Trojans overcame Garforth Town 2-1 on Tuesday night (March 1) to make it through to the last 16 of this year’s competition.

Kieran Watson gave the visitors a perfect start on ten minutes before Adam Scott doubled Staveley’s advantage on 82 minutes.

But that wasn’t the end of the scoring, as Gregg Kidd pulled one back for Garforth to set up a nervy finale in Leeds. Brett Marshall’s men managed to hang on, however, and now look forward to a trip to Grimsby next month to take on another NCEL Premier side, Cleethorpes.

The Trojans travel to Cleethorpes on April 13 (7.45pm kick off) looking to avenge the 3-0 loss in the league at the end of February and secure a place in the last eight of the cup.

Staveley were without a game on Saturday as only 11 Toolstation NCEL games, five in the Premier Division and six in Division One, managed to beat the recent bad weather.

Bridlington Town missed out on a chance to go to the summit in the top flight as they were beaten 2-1 at Maltby Main who climb up to ninth as a result of their victory.

Joshua Nodder got both of the Miners’ goals, the first a 38th minute penalty added to by his second just past the hour mark, before the visitors got a late consolation through Tim Taylor. The rest of the action focussed on the bottom half of the table with varying fortunes for those hoping to survive the drop.

Two of the relegation-threatened sides faced each other as Nostell Miners Welfare played out a 1-1 draw at home to Parkgate, Macole Lannaman putting the away side ahead on 55 minutes before parity was restored by Ryan Donaghue a quarter-of-an-hour later to make it a point apiece.

Parkgate go above Brigg Town who fall into the bottom three after their 3-2 loss at Rainworth Miners Welfare, Paul Grimes’ brace putting the Zebras ahead after Matthew Plant had given the hosts an early lead but goals in the last ten minutes from Declan Brewin and Liam Theakstone secured the Wrens their first victory in almost two months.

Pontefract Collieries edged further away from trouble with a 3-1 win at Retford United, Kingsley Wetherald and Steve Palfrey with strikes in the final five minutes to claim what could be a vital three points.

And, Thackley were 3-1 home winners over Garforth Town, Patrick McGuire, Ben Cohen and Thomas Dugdale with their goals to tighten their grip on 13th spot.
