The Chesterfield boss and his Southend counterpart were in disagreement over the way Wilson set Spireites up for the game, which they won 1-0.

Brown called it a ‘smash and grab’ raid and Wilson said his men were worthy of the victory.

After watching his Shrimpers side lose to an 88th minute Lee Novak goal, Brown said: “In the end they’ve done a smash-and-grab on us and taken the spoils.

“Danny hasn’t come here to entertain the crowd.

“The 4-3-3 system that they put up against us was to come and get a point and they’ve got all three in the end.”

But Wilson’s post match views couldn’t have been more different.

He denied his strategy was to take a point back to the Proact: “I think we were worthy winners.

“We showed determination and adventure from the start and didn’t come here to just soak pressure up.

“There was lots of pace in the team as well as plenty of attack-minded players and we showed our intentions throughout. So I’m delighted with it as we defended well at times too.

“In fact apart from when we got caught cold at the start and Southend hit the post in the first couple of minutes, I don’t think Tommy Lee has had a significant save to make.”

Wilson felt the anxiety among the home fans inside Roots Hall was down to the Spireites performance.

“Sometimes when you’re at the top and things get a bit nervy, that transmits to the players, but from our point of view we created that nervousness too by playing so well. We controlled possession and deserved the win.”

And he picked out the match winner for special praise: “(Novak) is in great form and when he went through I knew he’d score.

“A couple of months ago that might not have gone in but he’s confident at the moment.”
