Boss Danny Wilson wants cooler heads to prevail when his players get into good positions, as they eye the first of seven huge fixtures to finish the League One season.

Ahead of the visit of Port Vale on Saturday, Wilson opened up about the club’s woes in the final third of the pitch – having scored just four goals in six March outings.

It isn’t a problem that has crept up on the manager, it’s a long term issue.

He said: “Every team round the bottom of the league will have problems scoring goals or they wouldn’t find themselves there.

“Throughout the season that has been a problem.

“We had one fixture where we got quite a few goals but that was a bit of a false dawn, we knew that at the time. You wouldn’t expect that on a weekly basis.

“It’s always been a concern that we don’t score enough goals from the chances we create.”

Wilson wants to see his midfield helping out the forwards with the responsibility of sticking the ball in the net, and better decision making.

“Maybe one or two need to chip in a bit more in key areas, from midfield or wide areas, without putting too much pressure on the strikers all the time,” he said.

“It’s a little bit of composure at times, it’s a bit of understanding what is required in certain positions, we have to show a little more calmness in those key areas.”

Port Vale won 3-2 when the teams met in November.
