On this day in history Chesterfield have finished seasons in the relegation spots, in an automatic promotion place and lost to Aston Villa.

In 2012 the Spireites were beaten 3-2 on the last day of the season at home to Brentford.

The visitors took a two goal lead through Leon Legge and Toumani Diagouraga before Franck Moussa responded.

Clayton Donaldson headed a third for the Bees before Mark Allott struck in stoppage time.

Chesterfield finished 22nd in League One and were relegated.

Five years earlier the Spireites went down 1-0 at Oldham, again ending the season with relegation to League Two.

Former Chesterfield boss John Sheridan masterminded the win for the Lancashire side, who cemented a place in the play-offs with victory.

In 2001 a 3-0 win at Saltergate concluded the season for Chesterfield, Halifax the unhappy visitors.

The Spireites finished third in Division Three and took automatic promotion.

On 5th May 1990 Chesterfield beat Grimsby Town 2-0 at Saltergate, before going on to reach the play-off final where they lost to Cambridge United, remaining in Division Four.

Reading were the visitors to Saltergate in 1981, and went home with nothing after a 3-2 defeat, the Spireites in the midst of a five-game unbeaten streak to finish the season.

In 1979 Chesterfield travelled to Walsall and won 1-0 at Fellows Park.

Seven years prior to that the Spireites were in action at Aston Villa, where they lost 1-0.
