Spireites: Leam calls for calm heads after flying start

Leam Richardson says Chesterfield will remain grounded despite making their best start to a Football League season in 13 years.

A last gasp winner on Saturday from Armand Gnanduillet gave the Spireites all three points in a 2-1 win over in-form Southend United.

It took their points tally to 10 from the opening four games and bettered the start made in their promotion winning campaign of 2010/11.

Chesterfield have been widely tipped to challenge this season but Richardson said the players must keep calm heads if they are to do so.

The Spireites’ assistant manager said: “If we keep our feet on the ground and continue to make strides forward we’ll get better, we’ll get fitter and we’ll get stronger.

“We must stay together because there will be a few sticky times, it’s a tough league full of very good teams. We’ve got to be patient, work hard and if we do that I’m sure we’ll be up there.”

The Blues were good value for their opening day win over Bury before another 2-0 victory saw them past Cheltenham at the Proact Stadium.

A battling display at Rochdale saw them come away from Spotland with a point before goals from Gary Roberts’ and Gnanduillet edged them past Southend.

Only a narrow defeat to Championship side Leeds United in an entertaining Capital One Cup Round One tie has blemished their start to the season.

And Richardson said Chesterfield travel to League Two new boys Portsmouth on Saturday in the ascendancy and encouraged the players to express themselves at Fratton Park.

“We’ll go down to Portsmouth and take the game to them,” he added. “I said to the players before the game against Southend I think through the season you get certain games that have defining moments in your season.

“It’s not the defining moment but certain games define the next few weeks and months and what you build on. It’s important they recognise that.”

Chesterfield have three home matches in September starting with the visit of Accrington on September 7 before Wimbledon a week later.

An away trip to early pace setters Oxford United follows that before the much-anticipated derby with Mansfield Town on September 28 at the Proact.
