Spireites' chief executive Chris Turner has hit back over the Sam Morsy affair, insisting: He is still a Chesterfield player.

Morsy gave a farewell speech to the club after scoring in Saturday’s defeat to Millwall, with Wigan thought to be the Spireites skippe’s next destination.

But Turner said: “I was disappointed to hear that Sam had made comments which suggested that he was on the move.

“Yes, there has been an enquiry from another League One club, but we have yet to receive an offer from them. Until we receive an offer that matches our valuation of Sam, he will remain a Chesterfield player.

“Sam will be out of contract in the summer and we have made attempts to secure him on a new deal, but he has made it clear that he would like to move.

“It is now a case of seeing whether a suitable deal can be agreed with another club or if Sam remains with us until the end of the season.

“I can assure our fans that our decision will be made, as always, in the best interests of the club. We only want players who are committed to the club and we will not stand in the way of any player who does not want to play for us.

“Sam has made a valuable contribution during his time at the club and he will leave with our best wishes, whether it is during this transfer window or when he is a free agent at the end of the season.”

Chesterfield are thought to be seeking at least £250,000 for Morsy, who has proved one of the most influential players in two and-a-half years at the club.

He was also voted Player of the Season in the League Two Championship campaign in 2013-14.
