Spireites: Chesterfield stopper Tommy Lee wants more clean sheets

The 27-year-old stopper had to be on his toes to keep out Elliott Richards’ thunderbolt with the scores goalless during a scrappy start to the game at the Proact.

Two moments of individual brilliance followed from Jay O’Shea and Armand Gnanduillet in the second half gave the Spireites a comfortable 2-0 win.

Lee said: “I think I got a bit lucky to be fair.

“It moved at the last minute and I just managed to get my fingers to it, and luckily enough it hit the inside of the post and gone across goal rather than nestle in the bottom corner.

“It was an important save at an important time but after that I think we dominated.

“After that I think we cut their chances down to a minimum and we got what we wanted in the end, which was three points.”

The Chesterfield keeper was full of praise for the quartet in front of him.

“I don’t want to make the saves, I want clean sheets and I want all the lads to be doing all the work, which I think they have been doing over the last few weeks,” he said.

Lee has overcome a shoulder injury that kept him sidelined earlier this season to become a regular again between the sticks. And he said, while it’s still possible, the players will continue to believe they can reach the League Two play-offs.

He added: “We are in a position we shouldn’t be in. But if we win nine games then we’ll be in the play offs.

“I’m not saying we’re going to win nine games, we’ll take each game as it comes, starting with Oxford.”
