REPORT: Chesterfield 3-1 Swindon Town

Ched Evans was on target again for Chesterfield.

Gary Liddle and Jay O’Shea had the Spireites deservedly ahead with Swindon goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux keeping the score respectable at the break.

Ched Evans marked his home debut with a goal midway through the second half before Town substitute Darnell Furlong’s late effort only proved to be a consolation goal.

Chesterfield made a strong start and nearly took the lead within five minutes.

A well worked corner was eventually put into the box by Dan Gardner but Evans’ header was palmed brilliantly onto the post by Vigouroux.

Swindon should have gone ahead moments later but Luke Norris’ tame effort could only find the grateful arms of Ryan Fulton.

Midway through the half, Chesterfield deservedly took the lead.

Vigouroux made a brilliant double save from Evans’ free-kick and Sam Hird’s follow-up but there was nothing the Swindon keeper could do to stop Liddle heading into the empty net.

The Spireites had the wind in their tails and, after efforts from Gboly Ariyibi and Gardner, Vigouroux was called into action again to stop O’Shea’s powerful shot.

Swindon boss Luke Williams had Vigouroux to thank for keeping the score respectable but after a push on Evans in the box deep into first-half injury-time, O’Shea fired in Chesterfield’s second from the penalty spot.

The visitors improved after the break but it was the Spireites who forged out the first chance of the second period.

Paul McGinn looked set for his second goal in a week but opted to pass rather than shoot when put through by Ariyibi.

McGinn wasn’t made to rue that missed opportunity for long as Ariyibi went past three Swindon defenders to reach the touchline before pulling the ball back for Evans, who tapped into the empty net.

Yaser Kasim fired over from substitute Jermaine Hylton’s pull-back with ten minutes to go in a miserable day all-round for the visitors.

Loanee Furlong marked his Swindon debut with a goal but it did little to dampen the mood on a dominant performance from the Spireites.
