Chesterfield v Eastleigh: LIVE UPDATES

Last updated: Tuesday, 02 March, 2021, 21:08

Not sure who it was but Eastleigh get a crucial block in to stop Asante finding the back of the net from about six yards out. It’s all Town.

By Eastleigh’s Tomlinson to snuff out Asante in the box after a lovely cut inside by the Blues striker. Moments before Asante had peeled off his marker and Clarke spotted him but his pass did not come off.

For Eastleigh’s Jack Payne for a foul on Smith as Town tried to counter. 57 gone, 0-0.

Asante has a shot blocked inside the area, Town keep the pressure on and Carline heads Whittle’s cross from the left straight at McDonnell.

Can the Spireites build on that encouraging first half?

Eastleigh have made a change, Cavanagh Miley replaces Sam Smart.

Half-time thoughts from fan writer Ben

Goalless at half-time then and it’s likely one of conflicting emotions for James Rowe and his men as they head in for the break. It was a performance that showed great energy from the Spireites, likely justifying the manager’s decision to ring the changes, and I think it’d be fair to say they’ve been the better side. However, despite having the upper hand, they’ve failed to capitalise and that has to be seen as a missed opportunity. That said though, there’s still plenty of time left in this one and if Chesterfield can maintain this level of performance, I’d be surprise if they don’t nick at least one before full-time. Overall, an encouraging half for Town and the game remains there for the taking. An interesting forty-five to come.

HT: Chesterfield 0 v 0 Eastleigh

The Spireites have played well and should be ahead.

Whelan had a shot blocked right on half-time.

The Spireites are dominating. Shots, corners, territory. Martin Smith is starting to show his quality. Eastleigh can’t get out at the moment. 40 played, 0-0.

This time from Gunning’s 25-yard free-kick. It’s on target but it is straight at McDonnell.

Asante breaks clear from a long ball forward, the Eastleigh defence back off but Asante’s sidefooted strike from about 20 yards is easily saved by McDonnell. 31 gone, 0-0.

Weston’s deflected strike from 25 yards was dipping in but Eastleigh goalkeeper McDonnell tips it over for a corner, which comes to nothing.

From Whittle from the edge of the area goes flying over the bar after a lovely pass by Weston. Town are on top now. 25 gone, 0-0.

A great pass by Whelan finds Asante in space on the edge of the box, he turns and shoots with his left foot but it takes a deflection and goes for a corner. The corner is delivered and Carline heads towards goal at the far post, Town claim for a penalty for handball but the appeals are waved away.

For Whelan. Asante pounces on a mistake by Eastleigh and plays in Whelan but he skews it wide from inside the box. Big chance that, would have fancied him to hit the target.

By Whelan. First a diagonal ball over the top to Whittle and then a brilliant interception on the opposite side wins Town a free-kick.
