Players tell Caldwell what's needed so Town can start winning

Gary Caldwell took a break from telling his players what they need to do to win this week and instead put the onus on them.

The Spireites squad had a meeting with coaching staff earlier in the week, when it was put to them that they needed to come up with solutions to the conundrum facing them – how to win.

Having been in charge for six games, Caldwell is yet to see his men claim a victory.

He admits there’s only so much he can do to affect games once they begin.

“I think you probably saw on Tuesday I was like a mad man in the technical area,” he said.

“I can shout and encourage, I’m trying everything, but I can’t come out of that technical area unfortunately and put people in positions.

“We had a chat on Monday where the players told me what they felt was needed.

“Too often I can tell them things and it’s just constantly telling them and they don’t really take it in.

“We put the onus on them to tell us what they needed to do to win games.

“They came up with certain goals they felt were important to go and win games.”

Addressing the spate of late goals conceded this season was one of the goals set by the players.

And they achieved it against Millwall on Tuesday.

Caldwell revealed: “One of them was not to concede in the second half.

“I didn’t tell them to say that, they came up with it, the defenders.

“I think you could see that responsibility and accountability, because they came up with it they knew the onus was on them to keep that clean sheet in the second half.

“They defended their box extremely well, they threw themselves in front of shots.

“It’s important the players take that responsibility and know how they’re going to win the game and what they need to do to win the game.”
