Players not considering relegation yet claims Spireites striker Dennis

Chesterfield might be seven points from League One safety but striker Kristian Dennis insists relegation remains unthinkable for the squad.

Dennis got the Spireites’ goal in a devastating 2-1 defeat at home to fellow strugglers Bury today.

The result was all the more galling because Town had performed so well in the first half and led 1-0 until the 80th minute.

“Everyone in the dressing room is bitterly disappointed, it’s a bitter pill to swallow having been 1-0 up,” he said.

“It’s the first time we’ve been 1-0 up in a game for ages, we just needed to see it out and unfortunately we didn’t.”

To read boss Gary Caldwell’s thoughts - click HEREDennis admitted there was an element of good fortune about his first half goal, but it was rendered meaningless by the two they conceded late on.

“I didn’t think I was going to get onto it, the defender had two or three yards on me but I just chased it and luckily got it, got it stuck under my feet and scuffed it in,” he said.

“That’s the kind of luck you need when you’re down here but we should have seen it out, and didn’t.

“They didn’t create anything first half, we should have taken that into the first half but for some reason we didn’t and got beat 2-1.”

The frontman, now joint top scorer at the club alongside the injured Ched Evans, revealed that players were told ‘home truths’ by manager Gary Caldwell at full-time.

And he says they’ll keep believing.

“Anything can be closed. As long as there’s a mathematical chance, no one is thinking of going down in there,” he said.

“We’ve just got to get some wins on the board asap.

“Hopefully Millwall are on too much of a high and come crashing down on Tuesday.

“We’ve just got to go there, work hard and get a result.

“We’ve got to get those wins, it wouldn’t matter if I wasn’t playing, whoever is playing, we’ve just got to win”
