McCourt and Whelan ran the show and are becoming fan favourites at the Technique Stadium.

Whelan made some intelligent runs behind the Barnet back line and you can see why he will give defenders a nightmare as he claimed two assists, the first of which split the away defence to send Asante through who finished superbly past Scott Loach in the Bees net to get his second of the game.

Whelan's next assist helped Asante to get his hat-trick as he pinged a delightful ball over the top and the striker once again did the rest as he kept the ball in play, cut inside and drilled his shot into the back of the net.

On Whelan's performance, Rowe said: "He played with high energy, he kept going and reacted really well in transitions to press, he was the bridge in midfield and linked up well with McCourt so overall I am really pleased for Tom."

McCourt was outstanding in the centre of the park, he dictated the play, looked really comfortable in possession and helped out defensively when needed.

McCourt capped off an all-round top quality performance by making a 60-yard run into the box for the Blues’ sixth.

"It is hard to pick a man of the match but I thought Jak McCourt was outstanding,” Rowe said.

Another player that stood out was Joel Taylor on his home debut, he made some excellent runs down the left and was a handful for the defenders all afternoon.

He almost assisted Scott Boden in the fifth minute with a beautiful cross but his header went wide.

Taylor got forward more in the second 45 and he finally did get an assist as he cut the ball back for Boden once again and this time the striker did score.

On the opposite flank, fellow new arrival, George Carline, impressed. He was solid at the back and minimalised any attacking threat that Barnet offered.

Overall, all five of Rowe’s signings made a big impression on me.
