Rhys Murphy gave the visitors the lead but Saidou Khan hit an instant equaliser two minutes later.
Debutant Luke Croll then turned the scoreline around, finishing from inside the area.
Kabongo Tshimanga came off the bench to add a third before Southend’s Sam Dalby missed an injury-time penalty.
Both sides ended a man down as Calvin Miller and Zak Brunt were sent off.
Here are Liam Norcliffe’s player ratings...

9. Saidou Khan 7
Playing as one of two number 10s, Khan showed bundles of energy to press and get in the box all afternoon. He arrived late at the far post to head in Miller's cross for the equaliser. He snapped into tackles and you would never know he has only just returned from injury. Came off on 65 minutes. Photo: Tina Jenner

10. Liam Mandeville 7
Playing alongside Khan in the number 10 role, Mandeville was more involved than previous matches and he linked the play intelligently at times, particularly in the first-half. Saw one shot from the edge of the box saved in the opening 45. Replaced with 15 minutes remaining. A decent display from him. Photo: Tina Jenner

11. Stefan Payne 6
He had one shot deflected wide just before half-time but unfortunately he wasn't much of a goal threat overall. In the second-half his hold-up play was a bit lacking. Subbed off with 25 left. Photo: Tina Jenner

12. Jim Kellermann 7
Came on for Khan with 25 minutes remaining. He brought a bit more bite to midfield and assisted the third for Tshimanga. Photo: Derbyshire Times
