'Not good enough' - John Pemberton unhappy with Chesterfield's 'poor' defending in defeat to Wealdstone

John Pemberton said Chesterfield’s first half performance in the defeat to Wealdstone was ‘not good enough’ and that it was the ‘worst’ they had played.

Tom Denton put the Spireites in front from the penalty spot after just three minutes when home goalkeeper Harry Isted clattered Nathan Tyson - forcing the striker to go off with a dead leg.

But the lead did not last long as Moses Emmanuel scored two goals in three minutes to put the dominant hosts ahead

Jacob Mendy Mendy’s superb long-range strike made it 3-1 with nine minutes to go and although Denton grabbed his second of the match with a close-range header from Jordan Cropper’s long’s throw, the Blues got what they deserved in the end.

The result means Town have lost four of their first five games of the season and sit third bottom of the National League.

On the performance, Pemberton said: “Not good enough first half. Second half we huffed and puffed, but I don’t think we played well at all tonight. We showed a lot of endeavour, but we didn’t play well.

“It is probably the worst we have played the first half.

“I thought we had them on the backfoot in the second half, but the strike at the end absolutely kills us.

“It was a perfect start but sod’s law my centre forward has to come off. If he had been all right I think we could have caused them all sorts of problems because they were playing such a high line which is why I started him.

“The first two goals were poor goals to give away.

“We can’t do anything about the third one, it is a wonder strike.”

Town had two goals ruled out in the second half - one for an apparent handball in the build-up - and one for a foul on Isted by Scott Boden.

“I don’t know whether they were fouls or not, but I was a bit disappointed with the officials - I thought they would be better,” Pemberton said. “We had the ball in the net for 3-3, the ref said it was a foul on the goalkeeper, no chance it is a foul. He has to go for it.

“We will just have to lick our wounds again.”
