No Ched Evans for the trip to Gillingham, question mark over goalkeeper

Gary Caldwell's Chesterfield side make the long trip to Gillingham for a Valentine's Day clash with another team in poor form, without their leading goalscorer.

A club director revealed on social media this afternoon that Ched Evans has not travelled for the League One clash due to his ankle injury flaring up again.

Speaking yesterday Caldwell said Evans was fully fit and ready to play 90 minutes.

The manager had only one other concern over availability, with goalkeeper Ryan Fulton struggling to overcome the effects of a virus he picked up late last week.

Addressing tonight’s hosts, Caldwell suggested Gillingham might find the relegation dog fight a little harder having been dragged back into it through recent results.

The Gills are winless in eight League One outings and sit four points above the drop zone.

“I think they’re on a little bit of a slide,” he said.

“Sometimes the teams coming back are more vulnerable than the teams who have been in it.

“For Chesterfield this has been the reality for a long time, but for the teams coming back down, they’re sliding back into it and that can be much more difficult.

“They’ll be under a lot of pressure, playing at home.

“It’s never easy to play at home in this situation, we have to go and make it an uncomfortable night for them and their supporters.”
