Nicky Law left frustrated after late postponement of Alfreton Town v Lincoln City

The game was called off at 5.45pm by match referee John Brooks who felt one area of the pitch was too frozen to be deemed safe to play on.

That was despite the club’s best efforts in trying to get the game on including having protective frost covers on the pitch for the best part of a week.

The covers, which are good to temperatures of minus three degrees Celsius, were only taken off around mid-day on the day of the game.

The postponement means that Alfreton are amazingly still waiting to play their first home fixture of 2015 with their last one being against Macclesfield Town on December 20, over six-and-a-half weeks ago.

Law was eager for the Lincoln game to be on so his squad could attempt to get last Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Woking out of their system.

“We were led to believe Tuesday’s game was going to be on all day and I wanted it on, but in the end there was one area of the playing surface that the referee thought was still a bit hard despite the covers” said Law.

“I am very disappointed it was off, but the referee is obviously thinking about the safety of players which I can understand.

“When I got to the ground at 5.30pm the pitch looked playable. But, with a forecasted drop in temperatures for the early part of the evening, I can understand why the referee has probably called it off. It is an expensive decision for the club, with extra police and stewards already organised.

“When you have had a disappointing result, you want the next game to come as quickly as possible but it hasn’t happened. We were going to shake things up a bit, but that has gone now and we have got to deal with it” ended Law.

Alfreton will now be hoping that the weather and temperatures improve sufficiently for this Saturday’s home league game against Southport to go ahead, particularly with another home fixture against Forest Green Rovers scheduled for next Tuesday (February 10).

A new date for the home game against Lincoln City will be announced as soon as it has been confirmed.

Meanwhile, Alfreton Town manager Nicky Law has brought in goalkeeper Tom Flynn as cover for Jason Mooney.

The loan of talented young stopper George Willis from Sheffield United ended on February 3, and he has now returned to the Blades.

Former Cowdenbeath keeper Flynn, 24, began his career with Newcastle United’s Academy set-up before moving on to Scottish club Hibernian.

He had loan spells with both Albion Rovers and Alloa Athletic but has most recently been with Northern League club Consett AFC after being released by the Hibees.

Flynn has joined Alfreton on non-contract term.
